Is My Phone eSIM Compatible? Traveler Checklist
Before buying a travel eSIM, confirm two things: your device supports eSIM and your carrier has not locked it to one network. Both matter for a smooth setup.
Check the settings menu
On many iPhones, look for Add eSIM in Cellular settings. On Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, look for SIM manager, mobile network, or download a SIM. The exact wording depends on model and software version.
Confirm the phone is unlocked
An unlocked phone can use service from another provider. If the phone is carrier locked, an eSIM profile may fail even when the hardware supports eSIM.
Know your dual SIM behavior
Most travelers keep their home number active for messages while using the eSIM for data. Set the travel eSIM as the mobile data line and keep your regular SIM from using roaming data.
Test before departure
If possible, install the profile while connected to Wi-Fi and make sure the eSIM appears in your cellular settings. Then activate according to the plan instructions.
Check plans after confirming your phone
Once your device is ready, choose a plan for your destination.
